White Elephant Garage Sale

Today I decided to attend a friend's garage sale, which is called the "Annual White Elephant."

Why it's called "White Elephant?" I don't know, but it must be a euphemism for "silent auction."

Because that's exactly what it is.

People basically bring things they want to get rid of and combine it with other people's junk. Then they walk around, look at other people's junk and write down their bid for anything they are interested in. Some bids start at $1, while others at $5. Yet in the end, there were tons of free stuff that people took home that belonged to someone else.

So no one really got rid of anything from their home... they only changed the item that occupies that space in their garage.

Picks from the WHITE ELEPHANT event:
1) Straw Fedora.
2) Chinese landscape painting.
3) Chinese calligraphy: "Nobel man, must act in a Nobel way."

[Please correct if I'm wrong and post a proper translation.]
